Croatia Sailing: Mljet

Sleep? Who needs it?

After a mere three hour snooze we were up for an early breakfast, amazed at the views from our bedroom windows. We had set sail and were on our way to the island of Mljet.

After a sneaky nap we decided the best way to kick our hangovers would be a refreshing swim in the ocean.

Into the blue

I'm on a boat

Let me tell you it was the jump that really woke us up.

We climbed the ladder to the roof of the boat when it was time for the swim stop. Nervous we lined up waiting for our turn to jump. The water looked a long way down from the top. I think we let a few people jump in ahead of us before we took the plunge.

I swear I screamed the whole way down.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Kowabunga!

Aye curumba!

The water really was fresh! It was just what we needed after a big night and those Tequila Boom Booms.

Catching up on the weather and shit

When we arrived at Mljet we had the opportunity to explore the National Park. We walked through the beautiful pathways to a boat that would take us to a secluded lake.

What hangover? Let's turn this island into a party island!

The lake, bit creepy

The crew

We spent the afternoon lounging around, swimming across the lake with the fish and eating gelati before settling in for an early night and a history lesson from our tour guide Adam.

Sunrise and sunset all in one day. Magical

Safe to say I slept like a baby.

Croatia Sailing: Hvar

The day we had been waiting for was finally here!

The sun was shining and it was finally warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt, and actually start working on our tans.

We were starting an 8 day Croatia Island Hopper tour with Busabout, and we were that excited.

Home away from home

It was our first holiday on our holiday. We found that travelling and holidaying are two completely different things. When travelling we are sleeping in a different bed every two nights and continually lugging our backpacks around with us on various forms of transport. But on a holiday we are sleeping in the same bed and can relax and unpack and our transportation is all ready for us.

Now can you see why we were excited?

We boarded our boat, dumped our bags in our tiny but cute cabins and were encouraged to lie out and relax on the top deck before the tour began. Is this heaven??

Living the high life

Best seats in the house

Once we set sail we met our fellow passengers and tour guide. There were 14 Aussies, 1 Kiwi and 2 English lads, and they would be our family for the next week.

An afternoon lying out on the roof of the boat, my only complaint was that it was a little cold because of the wind! So when our first swim stop came about, we were reluctant to get in the water.

Each day the boat will stop and we have an opportunity to jump off and go swimming in the Adriatic Sea. A few brave people made the jump, claiming “the water wasn’t cold, it was fresh”.

Think I’ll wait until the weather warms up a bit thanks!

That evening we made it to our first island, Hvar. It was beautiful with boats lined up at the dock, trees and flowers and impressive old buildings. Home to the rich and famous I was definitely in my zone. A quick drink and explore and we were out to our first group dinner.

Amazing

Love it

We dined at a seafood restaurant where I ordered shrimp pasta, but unfortunately the shrimp wasn’t shelled and all I was eating were antennae and shrimp legs.

I'll stick to my drink thanks

We found that Happy Hour was a big part of the trip. Back to the boat for drink specials and some intense games of Kings, and we were ready to go out.

Where the party's at

We hit up Kiva bar for some drinking and dancing, and we learnt of the Tequila Boom Boom.

I had no idea what it was, but I would soon find out.

They're going to do what??

A tequila Boom Boom involves wearing an old helmet, while the bar tender makes you a tequila and lemonade drink. The only catch is to shake the drink the bar tender hits you over the head with the glass. Hard. Repeatedly.

The devil wears red

Ouch! She actually loves her job

It was so fun but actually painful! I had distinct lumps on my head from where she hit me, even through the helmet.

But you only live once right? And the tequila went down great after that.

Girls just wanna have fun

Call me maybe?

Bit of crowd surfing? Why not

It was such a fun night to start our Croatia trip. Getting to bed at 5:30am it would be a struggle to make it to breakfast before 9am!

Pre Croatia Sailing: Split

Aussies are great. We made friends with more Australians than we could count while we were in Europe – we’re everywhere!

Whilst on a pub crawl in Amsterdam we met Stevie and his friend Daniel, and we planned to catch up with them in Split before our sailing tours.

About to live off a boat for a week we wanted to take it easy, and recover from an interesting night on the overnight ferry.

We spent the day strolling around town browsing the expansive markets, putting our feet in the ocean and finding the boats we would be living from the next day.

Split is a great town with a mix of new and old. The main boardwalk has countless new restaurants and cafes, while still incorporating the surrounding old buildings.

The day before a Croatia Sailing tour should be restful and relaxing. But the night before is a different story!

Hiring a tiny apartment it was the first time we had actually cooked a meal since being away. Pasta and tomato sauce it was! We even did the dishes (shock, I know).

Triple J Hottest 100 playlist pumping and mucking around with the webcam, it was one of the more fun nights in we’d had. And the three bottles of vodka that were drunk… I'm putting it down to training for the week ahead on Croatia Sailing.

Loving Croatia already, Nikki

The Overnight Ferry, Part 1

So far we have slept in hostels, tents, on a train, and we were about to sleep on a ferry.

The overnight ferry of our nightmares.

I’m not going to lie; today was not my favourite day of the trip.

Our ride for the night, makes me sick looking at it

For some reason we decided to catch a train from Venice to Ancona, where we would pick up the ferry for Split, Croatia. We realised too late that it would have been much easier and less stressful to simply take the Busabout bus to Ancona. Mistake #1.

Once our train arrived in Ancona we had to make it to the ferry port. The sign said it was 800m away from the train station, so we started the walk. 2km later and our backs aching, we still weren’t there. Mistake #2.

We were catching a Blue Line ferry into Split, and we knew we had to be checked in and ready to board by 6:30pm. Then 6:30pm rolls around and we are told we should have already picked up our ferry tickets from the Blue Line office – 2km away in the direction we had just come from!

You have got to be kidding me.

Mistake #3.

We’re told a bus will come “in 10 minutes” to take us to the ticket office, and by this stage it is almost 7pm. Freaking out is an understatement.

On the bus with 20 huge men and a few other stray backpackers who also didn’t get the memo, we finally got our tickets, passed passport control and boarded the ferry.

Please tell me I'm in Split already

We had booked the cheapest option of ‘air seats’. The thoughts that crossed our minds:

“Oh no, we’re going to be sitting outside”

“What if it rains?!”

“It’s going to be so cold we’re not going to get any sleep!”

Turns out ‘air seats’ simply means aeroplane seats, and we would be sleeping in a room of about 40 of these. Inside. Phew.

We dumped our backpacks, ate a hideous and hideously expensive meal, and joined others in the bar on the top deck. Getting drunk on an overnight ferry with Croatia sailing only a few days away didn’t seem like such a fun idea to me.

It was a blessing that the only people in our room were the three of us and our friend Glynn. We spread out over the room, pulled out our sleeping bag liners as blankets, and tried to get some sleep.

In the middle of the night I woke up to find Ash and Liv weren’t in their air seats. Annoyed thinking they must have been offered a spare bed in a cabin, I sat up properly to see them both asleep on the floor.

Good idea – I didn’t think of that.

Bad idea – it hurt my back and I’m too tall and my legs were hanging out in the walk way.

Back to my air seat.

Let's Split, land ahoy!

I woke up to an alarm sounding at 6am waking all passengers. Another horrible and horribly expensive meal and I was so glad to arrive in Split.

And I was super excited for the big week ahead in Croatia, cruising the Dalmatian Coast.

Venice: Living like movie stars…in a tent

Daniel Craig runs through the streets of Venice in Casino Royale. Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp prance around town and cruise the canals in The Tourist. So no surprise I was expecting an equally glamorous stay in Venice.

Not to be sleeping in a tent. Which we were, by the way.

Due to our issues with the soccer and Champion’s League, we had to cut our stay short to only one night. One night in a tent. We’ve done dodgy hostels, come on we can do this.

So the three of us piled into our tent, fitted only with one light, one power point, a bunk bed and one single bed. It was cosy to say the least, but it was a bed. And it was cheap, only €11 each for the night.

It was also clear we had sacrificed location for cost, as we were situated a 10 minute walk and then 20 minute bus ride out of town.

By the time we got into the city we were busting to take a gondola ride through the canals. Our Busabout guide, James, suggested we pick a gondola from one of the smaller canals rather than from the main square, for a cheaper ride for budgeting travellers. He also suggested we go during meal times to avoid waiting.

Ciao bella

The general rate for a gondola ride during the day is €80 and €100 at night. We found a cute gondola captain, Alex, who we negotiated to €90 (€30 each) for the ride. Perfecto.

This was my second gondola ride, but it was so luxurious and relaxing. Alex serenaded us and told us of his family and the local history.

Ready to roll, or float

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's amore

Their back doors open up onto water

During the ride the three of us were so happy. Melbourne was sleeping and we were cruising the Venetian canals. We even fantasised about being proposed to on a gondola ride (close, but no Trevi Fountain: take note fellas).

Livi is unimpressed with Ash's lack of diamonds

No cars, just boats

My Corolla would not be welcome here

High on life we sat down for a traditional Italian pizza and a glass of wine, before setting off in search of San Marco Square, the main piazza in Venice.

Pizza and wine, buon appetito!

Venice can be notoriously tricky to navigate, so meeting up with friends who had already been in the city a few nights; we expected them to be able to find their way. Yeah right, they got us to the square, but couldn’t get us back to the bus stop to get home.

Have we been here before? It all looks the same! Yes, we are lost

Finally we've found you. The Duomo

After wandering around, getting lost, eating gelati, getting more lost, it was time to ask for directions.

I know enough Italian to string together a sentence and get my point across. So it was fun to ask a nice old man for directions to the bus stop, and actually understand his response.

So we were saved and back on our way to our tent. Great, I forgot about the tent.

Although we only had one night in Venice we got to do most things we wanted. Last time I was in Venice I also visited the Doge’s Palace, climbed the bell tower and took a day trip to the islands of Murano and Burano – activities to consider if time permits.

And sleeping in the tent wasn’t that bad, until the early hours of the morning when trucks started driving down the highway next to our fabric walls.

Munich: Dachau Concentration Camp

One of the Busabout optional excursions for Munich was a tour of Dachau Concentration Camp.

Dachau was opened in 1933 and was the first concentration camp to be opened in Germany.

The tour was definitely confronting; some parts were quite graphic, and overall heartbreaking.

If it is something you would be interested in I would encourage you to do the tour. It can be difficult to take in, but it is an important part of history to reflect upon.

A memorial sculpture at Dachau

We made our visit through Gordon’s Tours, costing us €17 each. It left from the centre of Munich, and lasted around 4-5 hours including travel.
