It couldn’t be easier catching London’s underground tube system. Network map in hand, we have navigated our way across London to shop, visit the Queen and see a few movies.
Learning how to use the tube like real tourists
It is so easy. The train stops are closer together than
in Melbourne, and on average we have waited only one minute for each train
service, from whichever station we are hopping on.
It costs £7 for the equivalent of a daily
ticket, which is super expensive. We bought a weekly ticket for around £27
which has more than paid for itself.
No matter how far you walk in any direction, you will
come across an underground station.
We could also use the same ticket to catch a real life
red double-decker bus. The friendly bus driver along with stop announcements
made catching the bus a piece of cake. Plus it’s fun to sit up top.
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Walking is another option if it’s not too cold out. From
our hotel we are a 10 minute walk to Oxford Street, a 15 minute walk to clubs
in Mayfair or Soho, and a 15-20 minute walk to Leicester Square. There are
restaurants, parks, laundrettes and supermarkets everywhere in the city, so
walking is definitely the cheapest way to get around. It’s also good for some
exercise and to walk off cheap pub meals.
If travelling to London I highly recommend using the tube. The trains are so frequent, the maps easy to read and the staff are friendly and happy to provide assistance.
Or if all else fails, we took a bike and cart home from
Mayfair for £10.
Bargain!
